ROOFING / GREAT FALLS, MONTANA

After hail or wind:
what should you do about your roof?

Start with what you can see safely, write down what changed, and arrange an assessment before deciding on repairs or replacement.

Start from the ground

Wait until the storm has passed and conditions are safe. From the ground, look for missing shingles, roofing debris, displaced gutters, or a change in the roofline. Inside, note new ceiling stains or leaks. Take photos only from places you can safely access; you do not need to climb onto the roof to request help.

Visible changes are reasons to ask for an assessment, not a diagnosis of the cause or extent of damage. A roof can need attention even when you have not noticed an indoor leak.

What to send with your roofing inquiry

  • Your property address in Great Falls or a nearby community.
  • The approximate storm date and when you first noticed a problem.
  • What changed: a leak, missing shingles, debris, or another concern.
  • Your roof’s approximate age, if you know it, and any previous repairs.
  • Photos taken safely from the ground or inside your home.

If water is actively entering, say that at the start of your inquiry so the urgency is clear. Keep away from sagging ceilings, damaged electrical equipment, and other unsafe areas. For an immediate threat to life or safety, contact emergency services.

Repair or replacement? Let the condition guide the decision.

A storm does not automatically mean you need a whole new roof. Ask the person assessing it to explain what was found, where the problem is, and why the proposed scope fits the condition. A limited repair and a replacement are different projects; the quote should make that distinction clear.

Before agreeing to work, ask for a written scope covering the areas involved, materials, preparation, cleanup, price, and scheduling. Ask how any additional damage found during the work would be documented and approved.

Questions worth asking before work begins

  • What did the assessment find, and can you show me photos?
  • What does the proposed repair or replacement include?
  • Who will perform the work and coordinate the project?
  • How will scheduling and weather delays be communicated?
  • What is excluded from the quote?
